Security Guide: Verifying bKash, Nagad, and Rocket Payments for Merchants

Mobile Financial Services (MFS)—including bKash, Nagad, and Rocket—form the lifeblood of digital commerce in Bangladesh. Millions of daily transactions power everything from online boutique stores and SaaS platforms to tuition fees and utility bills. However, manual payment verification leaves merchants vulnerable to fabricated payment screenshots and counterfeit Transaction IDs (TrxID).

The Vulnerability of Manual Screenshot Verification

Many social media and e-commerce sellers ask customers to send funds to a personal or merchant wallet and send a screenshot via Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp. Fraudulent actors use photo editing applications or online fake receipt generators to produce convincing transaction receipts with legitimate-looking timestamps, phone numbers, and Transaction IDs. Staff who manually approve orders based on images alone frequently suffer financial losses.

The Principle of One-Time Transaction ID (TrxID) Verification

Every genuine MFS transaction generates a unique alphanumeric Transaction ID (e.g., 9K4M82LA7X). To ensure zero fraud, a payment verification system must enforce three immutable rules:

  1. Uniqueness Constraint: A Transaction ID can only be redeemed once. If a user attempts to submit a previously recorded TrxID, the system immediately rejects the duplicate claim.
  2. Amount & Recipient Matching: The transaction must match the expected bill amount and target wallet number within verified parameters.
  3. Timestamp Validation: Transactions older than a defined threshold (such as 24 hours) cannot be claimed for newly created shopping orders.

Securing Webhook Callbacks

When automated verification engines confirm a valid payment, they notify the merchant’s backend server via HTTP webhooks. To prevent malicious third parties from forging webhook calls, payloads must be cryptographically signed using HMAC-SHA256 signatures, ensuring complete data integrity and authenticity.
